As part of the renovation of Jungmansgatan 31-33, Mareld was commissioned to give new life to the shared outdoor areas and residential garden. Due to extensive re-waterproofing, the entire courtyard was removed – thus we had a blank canvas to play with! As always, we took inspiration from the site: its long and narrow form is bounded by a lush, but dramatic rockface on one side, and apartments on the other.

The design concept aimed to break down the long corridor-like site into a chain of smaller, intimate gardens with varied social functions. Amongst other things, the residents can now enjoy a new playground, an outdoor gym, places to sit and sunbath, as well as play boule. The planting concept is based around creating a lush, green environment, with robust and varied vegetation. We chose plants that reflect seasonal change – blooms in spring and summer, as well as fruiting, bright colours in the autumn, and greenery in the winter.

General wayfinding lighting is complemented by spotlights highlighting the site’s dramatic rockface, softer glow lamps around the outdoor grill spots, and an identity-defining artwork by the garden’s entry. The material palette is simple and robust. Entries are marked with concrete with stone edges and the existing garage wall is clad in Corten steel.
