Hjällbo park

Category: Dialogue, concept design and tender package
Location: Gothenburg, Sweden
Year: 2021-2022
Client: Poseidon

As part of the efforts to develop Hjällbo, MARELD has played a key role in renovating Hjällbo park. For the past few years, the police have classified Hjällbo as a particularly vulnerable area. Poseidon and Park och Naturförvaltningen in Gothenburg agree that upgrading the park and providing staff on-site can help improve Hjällbo over the coming years. The goal is also to increase play opportunities and create connections with nature. By involving children in the planning process, engagement with the area is fostered. The hope is that the renovation will lead to increased safety, better environments, more activities for the children in the area, and making Hjällbo a destination for families from other parts of the city.

After renovation: The plateau has been transformed to create distinct spaces and add exciting play features. The slopes are embedded in lush greenery, and a staircase leads to the plateau, now surfaced with gravel. On the plateau, you'll find new play options, seating areas, a grill, and a slope slide.

The park is designed based on four key elements: water play, reuse, inclusivity, and nature play. These elements were chosen based on the site's conditions and form an essential foundation for the overall design. Together, they create a spatial, nature-oriented variety for both children and adults.

The zoning organizes the area into distinct spatial sections, illustrating the flow and interaction between the various spaces. The orange entry zones help create a sense of orientation for the site.

We have integrated nature play into the site's existing features, where elevation changes are nestled in greenery, including a slope slide and a well-designed staircase. Around the new building, a large wooden deck is created at different levels, inviting larger groups to gather or allowing individuals to sit along the edge and look out over the area.

The plant material has been chosen to create beautiful seasonal variations, support bees, bumblebees, and butterflies, and inspire imaginative play.
